Cement board is heavy and relies on cement for strength. An XPS backer board has a closed-cell foam core, so it is much lighter and easier to carry and cut, resists water absorption (≤1.0% after 96 h immersion per manufacturer data), adds thermal insulation (≤0.030 W/(m·K)) and acts as a decoupling layer that helps prevent tile cracking.
Standard size is 1220 × 2440 mm. Thicknesses: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 50 mm. Core colours blue, green, pink or white (customisable).
